Religion isn't "an out"

Please don't use your religion as some kind of excuse or  shield
That you use to show another you're justified in what you yield
For nothing about your believing or nothing about your faith
Should exist to cushion your ego or throw others from their place

But this is what goes on happening like it's something suppose to be
We wear our faith like some  banner "we're wanting the world to see
We wave it out like some kind of trophy  whenever we're feeling a loss
And  pull it out to get some exemption.. "we're followers of the cross"

Yet how terribly mistaken..disillusioned.. we all must really be
To think that we can hold out religion ..like some kind of guarantee
We gloat around like we're some giants incapable of any sin
And point out the faults of others avoiding the company they're in

Tis okay to claim to be followers and warrior for the love of Christ
But it's not okay to run around boasting like you have some noble ties
That excuse you from understanding or frequenting the hurt and  poor
Start living the faith you're claiming and stop closing God's open door
